Ralph Vaughan Williams Fantasia (Quasi Variazione) on the 'Old 104th' Psalm Tune

Piano Concerto in C major

A Sea Symphony

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

Hilary Davan Wetton conductor

City of London Choir

Sophie Bevan soprano

This evening of two halves champions both Vaughan Williams’s well-loved and lesser-known works. We hear Vaughan Williams in his full and mighty force, in the well-loved restless, capricious and majestic Sea Symphony, led by star soloists Roderick Williams and Sophie Bevan. Before that, pianist Mark Bebbington begins the evening with a flourish, taking centre-stage as soloist in the unusual Fantasia on the Old 104th Psalm Tune, as well as in the dancing melodies of Vaughan Williams’s jazz-influenced, passionate Piano Concerto in C.

In the choir’s 2016 performance of Dona nobis pacem here, the Guardian said their ‘handling of the Vaughan Williams… was an achievement of which it can be proud’. Under the baton of Hilary Davan Wetton once again, this will be a deserved celebration of the ground-breaking composer.
